Game Recap: Giants 7, Mets 6

This game did not get off to a good start, as the Ryan Vogelsong gave up a three-run homer to Carlos Beltran in the first inning, bringing the Mets to a win expectancy of 81.6% at the time. But somehow, this super-lineup managed to overcome the early deficit and win the game in extras.

  • By the way, this is has to be the weirdest, most ridiculously hilarious lineup ever. Aaron Rowand and Miguel Tejada batting first and second respectively. Then Mike Fontenot batting third. For the record, I don't approve of this lineup. The logic used by some in support of it was beyond stupid:

Fussing about the lineup? Stats from past 7 games: Rowand .321, Miggy .227, Fontenot .353 while Freddy .174, Huff .050, Pat .095 #SFGiantsTue May 03 21:16:08 via HootSuite

  • Miguel Tejada is a disgrace to mankind. He went 0 for 5 tonight, and guess how many pitches he saw? 12. For comparison, Daniel Murphy also went 0 for 5 in this game -- but he just so happened to see more than twice as many pitches (27).
  • Nate Schierholtz went two for four with a home run, an intentional walk, and a stolen base. I'd love to see him slowly accumulate more and more playing time -- because he really deserves it. He's basically a league-average outfielder with upside.
  • Ryan Vogelsong's outing was surely a disappointment, but by no means was it a surprise. 4 IP, 5 R, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR. Vogelsong has a career K/BB below 1.5 in the majors -- and while it was fun to believe that he had suddenly re-created himself and become a starter worthy of permanently replacing Barry Zito (I've heard many Giants fans suggesting that Vogelsong should permanently take Zito's place in the rotation...), it's just not realistic. And Zito's really not that bad -- though the velocity issues are certainly a concern.
  • On a side note, I find it somewhat disturbing that Ryan Rohlinger, Emmanuel Burriss, and Darren Ford are all getting at-bats in the majors while Brandon Belt is down in AAA. I actually no longer see why it makes sense to keep Ford up and leave Belt down.
  • Worth noting -- Mike Fontenot is currently at 0.3 fWAR, which is higher than Freddy Sanchez (0.1) and Miguel Tejada (-0.4). No way he maintains this pace -- ISO is at .243 currently -- but hey, it's been a nice little surprise.
  • In regards to the Jose Reyes rumors, GM Potential has a good write-up.
