Giants Acquire Jeff Keppinger

Courtesy of MLB Trade Rumors, the Giants have traded two minor league pitchers for Jeff Keppinger of the Houston Astros. Keppinger mashes lefties (career .381 wOBA), is tough to strike out (career 6% K rate), and plays acceptable defense at second base (-1.4 UZR/150). Expect him to occupy a platoon role with Mike Fontenot, and possibly fill in at shortstop or third base.

In exchange for Keppinger, the Giants gave up Henry Sosa (who was designated for assignment earlier this year; nobody claimed him off waivers) and Jason Stoffel. Both intriguing arms, but ultimately a good deal for the Giants.

Keppinger means an fairly decent upgrade for the offense, but obviously, he doesn't put them over the top. If you have an overwhelming urge to learn more about him, just click here, here, or here.
