Giants Lose 5-1 to Cardinals

The Giants lost to Chris Carpenter, and were only able to score one run off of him. Tim Lincecum was his usual struggling self: 5.1 IP 4 ER, but said that he feels close to coming back. I don't know how reliable Tim Lincecum's opinion is, frankly, but I'd rather be hearing that from him than pessimism.

I'm going to try to take a positive view on this game: The Giants are on the road, facing a legitimate playoff contender and their perennial Cy Young candidate (Carpenter). It was a tough game, and they lost, but they'll be facing Garcia tomorrow, and should be able to score some runs.

Here's some notes:

  • Buster Posey had his 3rd consecutive multi-hit game, and extended his hit streak to 8 games.
  • I owe an apology to Jose Guillen: Although his defensive range and overall speed are mediocre at best, he has not been quiet with the bat. He has been batting .417 (10 for 24), and at a time when the Giants are generally struggling, he's making it hard for people to use him as a scapegoat.
  • Dontrelle Willis is apparently on his way to being called up soon. I'm going to say that they have nothing to lose with this transaction. They really aren't going to risk anything with him, and if he returns to form miraculously (maybe like Pat Burrell did...), it will be great for the Giants.
  • I truly believe that Ishikawa and Schierholtz need to play more often. They can't be expected to perform when they are given 1 or sometimes 0 AB per game. They play great defense, and are decent hitters. I don't think it's too impossible to give occasional days off to Burrell and Guillen to give these guys more playing time. It would improve the Giants' defense (and hitting vs. RHP) and would also keep Guillen and Burrell fresh.
