The Braves Bring Out Their Bombs and Brooms

Unfortunately, this tells the whole story.

To be quite honest, the Giants were lucky to even have a chance today...

  • The lineup mustered only three hits against rookie Brandon Beachy, who retired the first 11 batters he faced. Getting shut down by guys like Tommy Hanson and Tim Hudson is understandable, but most of us expected a little more punch today.
  • Jonathan Sanchez's velocity was down around 90, but he managed to battle through five innings. On the radio broadcast, they mentioned he was feeling a bit under the weather, so this should only be a temporary concern.
  • While Jason Heyward's home run was painful to watch, the two walks preceding it were much worse. Jeremy Affeldt's stuff is nasty, but he needs to show a bit more control if he wants to continue pitching in high leverage situations.
  • Freddy Gonzalez is clueless when it comes to using his bullpen. No one knows why he stayed with Jairo Asencio for so long in the 7th, especially after Miguel Tejada drew a bases loaded walk. Just for reference, Tejada now has 4 walks on the year.
  • Just when Aaron Rowand was beginning to fade back in obscurity, he blasted another clutch extra-base hit. His BABIP-fueled hot streak seems to be over, so it'll be interesting to see if he returns to the bench when Andres Torres comes back.
  • Brian Wilson plays with fire on a daily basis, and today, he got burned. Some people are questioning Bochy for sending him out there again, but I don't have a problem with it. On the other hand, going to a 3-0 count on Nate McLouth is just bad.

No one likes to see the Giants get swept, especially at home, but by no means is it time to panic. Matt Cain and the lineup will get a prime opportunity to rebound against Pirates on Tuesday.
