Here's a little bit about him:
- 6'2, 195 lbs.
- Bats L, throws R
- Great patience at the plate
- Excellent strike zone judgement
- Hits to all fields
- Solid speed
- Good range at short, but an average arm; many believe he projects as a second-baseman at the major-league level
- High contact guy, will hit for average, but with below-average power
- Hit .398/.502/.642 in 226 at-bats at St. John's this year, with a park/schedule-adjusted weighted on-base average of .479
- Potential to move fast through the Giants farm system
- Keith Law believes that Panik ultimately projects as a utility infielder. Panik did not crack Law's top 100 draft prospects.
- Baseball America writes that "Panik's profile is similar to that of Freddy Sanchez, except he has a more polished approach and isn't allergic to walks." They had Joe Panik ranked as the 67th best draft prospect.
- Giants scouting director John Barr has said he believes Panik can remain at shortstop and profile as a number-two hitter.
