Giants' Midseason Top 25 Prospects

Probably an unconventional list; rankings based on a variety of factors, including age, ceiling, proximity to the majors, scouting reports, stats, video, etc.

1. Zack Wheeler, age 21, RHP
Great stuff, high ceiling, and still young for California League; command needs work. Great K and GB rates.

2. Gary Brown, age 22, CF
80 speed, great defensive potential, gap power, and should hit for a high average. Good contact rates, walks shouldn't be as much of a concern as they were when he's drafted.

3. Joe Panik, age 20, SS
Good contact/on-base abilities, signed quickly and should move fast through the Giants' system. John Barr seems confident he can stick at SS.

4. Eric Surkamp, age 24, LHP
Fantastic K/BB numbers, great secondary pitches. Hip injury from 2010 isn't a concern. Could join Giants rotation as early as mid-2012.

5. Heath Hembree, age 22, RHP
Has put up fantastic K numbers this year (K/9 north of 16 in San Jose, north of 13 in Richmond so far). Good FB velocity, good strong build for a power reliever.

6. Hector Sanchez, age 21, C
At age 21, he's pretty advanced (though not major-league ready). Above-average bat and glove potential. Strong arm from behind the plate.

7. Francisco Peguero, age 23, OF
Five-tool potential. Walk rate's a concern, but he's got good contact numbers, and should be able to maintain a relatively high batting average on balls in play.

8. Ehire Adrianza, age 21, SS
Like to think of him as a poor man's Elvis Andrus. Excellent defense, above-average speed. Doesn't hit the ball with authority, though he does at least draw walks. Offensive standards for a great defensive shortstop are low (see: Brandon Crawford)

9. Thomas Neal, age 23, OF
Respectable numbers at Triple-A Fresno this year: .295/.351/.409; as a corner outfielder, I'd like to see him hit for more power.

10. Jarrett Parker, age 22, OF
Another toolsy guy; I like the on-base skills.

11. Chuckie Jones, age 18, OF
My favorite sleeper prospect. Ultra-athletic, has flashed good plate discipline in limited time in the minors.

12. Kyle Crick, age 18, RHP
Giants' supplemental round pick; just signed. Front-of-the-rotation potential.

13. Chris Dominguez, age 24, 3B
Has hit .296/.322/.472 in 115 PAs in Richmond since being called up to Double-A, pretty much picking up where he'd left off in San Jose. Great power, strong 3B arm, BB/K numbers a concern.

14. Mike Kickham, age 22, RHP
Through 13 starts at Augusta, he has a 4.71 ERA (3.37 FIP) and a K/9 near 10.

15. Charlie Culberson, age 22, 2B
Young for Double-A; has hit .268/.304/.389 there with 16 walks and 90 strikeouts.

16. Tommy Joseph, age 20, C
Still quite young for San Jose. Good power, but I'd like to see him raise the OBP. Not sure if he can be an acceptable defensive catcher.

17. Ryan Verdugo, age 24, LHP
He's made a relatively smooth transition to starter this year; like the K/BB numbers.

18. Seth Rosin, age 22, RHP
Looks like he's converted to a relief role after making several starts earlier in the year. Good numbers at Augusta on the year (3.69 ERA, 2.82 FIP)

19. Brett Pill, age 26, 2B
Haven't heard much about his second-base defense, but the transition to there from first likely ups his value. Good numbers at Fresno this year, with an OPS near .900

20. Conor Gillaspie, age 24, 3B
Like the walk rate (and contact rate), though as a corner infielder, I'd like to see him hit for more power.

21. Rafael Rodriguez, age 19, OF
Really young; hasn't put up impressive numbers at Augusta this year (sub-.600 OPS)

22. Adalberto Mejia, age 18, LHP
Young guy (even for the DSL), has put up very impressive numbers -- albeit in nine starts. 8.3 K/9, 0.7 BB/9, and a 1.01 ERA

23. Bryce Bandilla, age 21, LHP
Sleeper. LHP with great FB velocity -- touches 97. Certainly a project, though. Don't know if he'll start.

24. Roger Kieschnick, age 24, OF
Has hit .265/.315/.428 in 91 games at Richmond this year.

25. Dan Otero, age 26, RHP
Has put up pretty impressive numbers at Double-A and Triple-A this year. 1.19 combined ERA on the season with 8.71 K/BB.

Honorable mentions: Andrew Susac (hasn't signed yet), Jake Dunning, Jose Casilla, Nick Noonan

(Note: Blogger ate the original post, which really sucks. Had a lot more written about the top ten guys on this list...)
