In my research of past San Francisco Giants' drafts, I've come across a few interesting names. Guys I didn't know the Giants ever drafted, or draft picks I'd forgotten about.
Without further ado...
Brad Lidge was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 42nd round of the 1995 draft out of Cherry Creek High School (Englewood, Colorado). He didn't sign, eventually went on to play at the University of Notre Dame, and was selected by the Houston Astros in the first round of the 1998 draft. The rest is history...
Doug Fister is a name you probably recognize, as he's currently pitching for the Seattle Mariners, and has put together a solid season thus far (3.40 FIP in 50 IP). He was selected by the Giants in the 49th round of the 2003 draft out of Merced College, but he later went on to play at Fresno State University; the Mariners drafted and signed him in 2006 (7th round pick).
Davey Lopes, the Dodgers' current first-base coach and an accomplished player (39.3 career rWAR), was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 8th round of the 1967 amateur draft, but did not sign. The next year, he was drafted (2nd round) and signed by the Dodgers.
Keith Foulke, taken in the 9th round of the 1994 amateur draft, actually did sign with the Giants; but shortly after making his major-league debut with them in 1997, he was traded along with Brian Manning, Lorenzo Barcelo, Mike Caruso, Bob Howry and Ken Vining to the Chicago White Sox for Wilson Alvarez, Danny Darwin and Roberto Hernandez; he eventually developed into one of the top closers in the game, and had a pretty successful career overall (20.2 rWAR).
J.D. Drew was drafted out of high school by the Giants in the 20th round of the 1994 draft and, needless to say, didn't sign. He went on to play at Florida State University, was later drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, and has since put together an incredible career.
Last, but most certainly not least, Barry Bonds: as most know, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round in 1985. A few years prior, though, he was selected by the Giants 39th overall (out of high school) and did not sign.
