Sigh. |
Well, as you can see from the win probability graph, the third inning's where everything unraveled. 41 pitches for Bumgarner that inning. A blunder by Madison Bumgarner on an easy comebacker, and a bases-loaded walk. Ultimately, the blame lies in a poor offensive day for the Giants -- they had a few opportunities, but didn't really capitalize. And there were certainly some questionable calls in this game from the umpires.
Look, the Kansas City Royals are in first place in the AL Central. The Baltimore Orioles are in first place in the AL East. Until these things change, we can't put much stock in the current standings. Things will balance out over the course of 162 games (the Giants do, after all, have a positive run differential at the moment); the Giants are a truly talented team, and will inevitably regress to that talent level and play like the 88+ win team they are. (note: I say 88 conservatively...I expect the Giants to win 90+ games, personally).
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, these games aren't fun. But they'll get fun, soon enough. I won't be surprised if the Giants come out and rake against Tim Stauffer. Ah, that'd be good. But if not, before we start to worry, let's at the very least see what this team can do at home.
Oh yeah, and Brian Wilson comes back from the DL tomorrow, so that's something to look forward to.

In other news, I was contacted by the publishers of Derek Jeter: From the Pages of the New York Times a while back to see if I was interested in a review copy. I figured sure, why not? After all, I've always kind of liked Jeter (though I love to mock his defensive skills). So anyway, I should have a review of that posted some time in the very near future -- probably Wednesday or Thursday.
