Pablo Sandoval Homers as Giants Beat Rockies 6-3

Game recap, in bullet-point form....

  • Pat Burrell is beginning to gradually stray away from his three-true-outcomes Rob Deer-ness. Two singles and two flyouts for him in this one.
  • Oh yeah, and on that note: Burrell isn't struggling. Stop saying that, please. He entered this game with a wRC+ of 130, and presumably raised it (game wOBA of .447)...and that's not even taking into account his ridiculously low BABIP -- .182 coming into this game.
  • Freddy Sanchez had a couple more hits in this one. His ZiPS update coming into this one had him at a .324 wOBA for the 2011 season, which would essentially make him a 1.7 WAR player -- assuming his fielding's neutral. For $6MM, that's a bargain. And assuming he doesn't fall off a cliff -- he should be able to surpass his contract value for 2012 with relative ease.
  • Pablo Sandoval now has as many home runs as the Minnesota Twins.
  • All in all, solid outing from Jonathan Sanchez -- game FIP of 3.69...he induced groundballs (1.29 GB/FB). If he can do that on a consistent basis, that will really help to ease the damage his walks cause.
  • Good game from Mike Fontenot, who started in place of Miguel Tejada. A couple of hits and a walk (wOBA .753)...and a nice job legging out the triple. He clearly doesn't profile well as a shortstop, but hey, neither does Tejada.
  • The Rockies have a team wRC+ of 100. Sure, Troy Tulowitzki's been having a very nice season -- but the Rockies, as I've said before, are only marginally better, offensively, than the Giants.
  • Now it seems Aaron Rowand's another question for the Giants -- with his injury -- though Bochy said he might be able to play tomorrow. The Giants can be very unpredictable at times, so we'll see what they do with Cody Ross coming off the DL. My guess is Brandon Belt's the one to go, though. And would that really be so bad?

One last thing:

I would be remiss if I didn't mention this awesome graphic from Justin Bopp, as I initially suggested the idea to him.

It commemorates one of the, err, interesting moments in Giants franchise history. This:

YOU CAN PURCHASE THE PRINT HERE. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO SO -- along with the Willie Mays "the Catch" graphic.
