Matt Cain Gets Rocked, Giants Lose 10-2

Eh, that wasn't a fun one...

  • Matt Cain looked pretty bad out there -- 6 R in 4.2 IP. The pitch that Ty Wiggington hit for a three-run homer appeared to be right down the middle, and he clearly missed his spot there...The irony: Cain had a solid xFIP in this game -- 3.92; anyway, he made some costly mistakes, and paid for it. Not a good outing.
  • Jorge de la Rosa on the other hand, had a great outing; he kept walks to a minimum, and induced a lot of groundballs...game FIP of 2.21
  • Freddy Sanchez has officially won me over. Another pair of hits in this one, to go along with a walk (wOBA .623)...I expect him to surpass 3 WAR on the season, something he hasn't done since 2007.
  • Buster Posey's the only other hitter that really had a good game -- a couple of hits and a stolen base.
  • Oh yeah, and Buster Posey leads the Giants with three steals. I miss Andres Torres.
  • Interesting -- Dan Runzler allowed 2 R in 1.2 IP. His FIP? -0.53
  • Here's my take on the Brandon Belt decision: in the end, it's probably better for this team to send him down. Scouts are saying he needs time in AAA, the Giants' defense will benefit with Cody Ross sliding back into the outfield, the Giants will potentially get that extra year of control of Belt in the long-run, and at least Belt will see consistent at-bats this way. In retrospect, things probably would have worked out a lot better had Ross never been injured (duh), and if Belt had started the year in AAA. I'm no scout, but if the scouts are all saying he needs time, I trust them.
  • Troy Tulowitzki finally broke out in this series -- game wOBA of .740; he and Joey Votto have to be the favorites for the NL MVP at this point in the season, right?

All in all, a great road trip for the Giants; 4-2 ...off-day tomorrow.
