According to my sources, the Giants asked about Yorvit Torrealba, not Taylor Teagarden. But Texas wanted Santiago Casilla, and offered no relief on the $3.25 million Torrealba would make next season.
Torrealba isn't great. But he's clearly better than Eli Whiteside, and that's all that really matters here, right? As far as the Giants' catching options go, Torrealba is a suitable target. I mean, the Giants aren't going to be getting David Ross or Mike Napoli (man, would I love to get either of them...but I digress).
The Giants have no shortage of bullpen options, so Casilla is expendable. $3MM isn't much money at all, and this would give the Giants a solid backup catcher for 2012.
Make this trade happen. No need to quibble over $3MM. It's nothing sexy, but it's an improvement over the current Whiteside/Stewart situation.
