Shortstop, Catcher Problems Nothing New for the Giants

The following graph shows SF Giants position players, from 1958-2011, in terms of WAR production. It depicts 2+, 4+, and 6+ WAR seasons, grouped by position:


As you can see (click to enlarge the graph), throughout San Francisco Giants history, the shortstop and catcher positions have been most scarce in terms of production. This, of course, is the case in 2011, as the Eli Whiteside - Chris Stewart duo has combined for replacement-level production, and Giants shortstops have combined to hit .212/.277/.322, amassing a grand total of -0.3 fWAR. Perhaps it's not all that surprising though, as these are typically scarce positions (relative to other positions, at least).
