The Franchise

Tomorrow night, Showtime's "The Franchise" premieres. By now, you've probably seen the preview.

This is something unique, a chance to actually see what goes on behind the scenes. I suppose it's cliché to say, but this team is full of personalities, and I think it's a perfect fit for this reality series.

Of all the guys, though, the player I'll be most interested to follow: Barry Zito. His lucrative contract certainly overpays him, but many fans lose sight of the fact that he's not an awful player. He's just a durable average starter, paid like a superstar. The guy's constantly under scrutiny because of the seven figures, but I have the utmost respect for his ability to psychologically handle all of that. It's not about feeling bad for him (hard to feel bad for someone with a seven-year $126MM contract), but rather, respect and admiration.

As entertaining as Aubrey Huff, Pablo Sandoval, Brian Wilson, Tim Lincecum, etc. are, Zito's my guy to watch.
