A Closer Look at Giants Position Players

Earlier this week, Julian looked at Giants position players' WAR production from 1958-2010. The nifty graphic below goes a little more in-depth with this concept. Simply hover over the colored bubbles to see more detailed information. Like the graph in the last post, blue denotes a 2+ WAR season, red denotes a 4+ WAR season, and green denotes a 6+ WAR season.

Some points of interest...

  • The 1962 World Series team? Yeah, they were pretty decent. Every starter produced at least 2 WAR, and that doesn't even include Willie McCovey, who didn't play enough games at any one position to qualify.
  • I guess I didn't realize just how good Bobby Bonds was at his peak. For a five year period, he was up there with guys like Pete Rose and Willie Stargell. And hey, his son Barry wasn't half bad either.
  • Will Clark, Kevin Mitchell, and Robby Thompson were simply awesome back in 1989. One can only hope that young players like Posey, Sandoval, and Belt can emulate their dominance in the near future.
That's it for now -- hopefully, you'll have as much fun with the graphic as I did. Tableau is useful, and fairly simple, so you'll probably be seeing a lot of it going forward. Look forward to the pitching equivalent of this in a couple of days.
