It's an interesting read, and the Giants had a few players make the list --
-- Matt Downs (currently with the Houston Astros) was taken in the 36th round of the 2006 draft by the San Francisco Giants
-- Jonathan Sanchez was taken in the 27th round of the 2004 draft
-- Sergio Romo was taken in the 28th round of the 2005 draft
But there was something I found more interesting about the article -- two things, specifically -- and they appear in the comments section.
1) The first comment notes that the Padres' deadly bullpen trio, Luke Gregerson/Mike Adams/Heath Bell were drafted in the 28th round (in Gregerson's case) or not at all (in Adams' and Bell's cases).
2) The second comment, by the person who wrote the article, is also interesting:
Late in the draft (or afterward) teams most often are trying to find one of two things: 1) players who have one useful tool (or project to have one in time) or 2) a fringy overall player with great makeup/drive to succeed.
The latter type will represent the organization well and may will himself up the ladder through hard work and dedication. I know it sounds corny, but at the minor league level a player is competing with somewhere north of 5,000 other professionals. For those who aren't supremely talented, the intangibles matter.
These are of no particular relevance, and I really have nothing to add to these -- just found them to be extremely fascinating and enlightening, and felt like sharing them.
