Notes: Eric Surkamp Interview, Barry Bonds, Andres Torres
- The Giants agreed to terms with Andres Torres on a deal worth around $2.1MM
- Barry Bonds' trial hearing is set for Friday.
- Jim Caple of ESPN.com ranked all 30 MLB logos. He grew up a Giants fan, but he certainly didn't let his bias get in the way here.
- 24 Days of Magic has posted their interview with Eric Surkamp.
- Tim Lincecum was named by GQ as one of the 25 coolest athletes of all time.
- Sad news here...Mychael Urban will not be continuing his pre/post weekend radio shows with KNBR. There is good news, though, in that he could be bringing his shows to CSNBayArea.com.

Notes: J.T. Snow, How the West was Won, World Series Rings
A fresh batch of morning notes for you...
- J.T. Snow -- one of my favorite Giants of all time -- did an interesting Q&A over at Baseball Prospectus. I think he was a little kind when comparing the offenses of the SF Giants of 2002 and 2010: "I think that this year’s team had better pitching. I think that [the 2002 team] probably had a better offense and played a little better defense."
- Check out the Baseball Card Hall of Fame. Hilarious stuff.
- Chris Spurlock of Beyond the Box Score created an awesome animation of how the NL West was won. It's an animated 162-game progression of the standings in bar graph form.
- A picture of the prototype for the Giants WS ring is out.
- Paul Sullivan sent me a funny video he did for his blog, about how MLB should market the SF Giants to appeal to a younger audience.
- I showed that Willie Mays video to Notgraphs and they posted it...pretty cool.
- Around the SF Giants blogosphere: I'm currently awaiting some things, and if I don't write it down here, I'll probably forget, but it's worthy of sharing...Bay City Ball will probably release their top five prospects soon -- definitely looking forward to that; 24 Days of Magic will hopefully post their Eric Surkamp interview soon, and Fire Sabean should be back soon -- his new blog will be Bleed Orange and Black.

Peek at the Prospects: Eric Surkamp
Eric Surkamp
Position: LHP
Age: 23
John Sickels' Grade: C+
Twitter Account: @esurkamp
In 17 games at high-A this year, Eric Surkamp pitched very well, sporting a very nice strikeout rate (9.6 K/9) and walk rate (2.0 BB/9). Backed by a 2.54 FIP, he posted a 3.11 ERA on the year before incurring a hip injury. Here's what When the Giants Come to Town had to say about him:
The consensus with Surkamp is basically as follows: good potential -- as the K rate and BB rate surely indicate. But he's only reached high-A thus far. As Sickels says, "he can't rank higher until we see how Double-A goes." He's far from major-league ready at this point, but he certainly looks promising.

He's a 3 pitch pitcher with a deceptive high 80's fastball, a biting curveball that is his best pitch, and an average changeup according to last year's BA scouting report. Hopefully he's healthy and ready to move up to AA in 2011. Ceiling is probably a #3 starter, on an average team, #5 in the current Giants rotation. In spite of the high K rate, Sickels has labeled him as an "intriguing finesse lefty." The label fits Surkamp well, though: he lacks velocity on the fastball, and has very impressive control -- he only walked 22 batters in 100+ IP in 2010.

Peek at the Prospects: Brandon Belt
The internet is rife with analysis on the Giants' top prospects -- most notably Fangraphs and Minor League Ball. On January 26, Baseball America will release their San Francisco Giants Top Ten Prospects Scouting Reports. Leading up to that, I thought I'd take a peek at various Giants prospects, referencing the analysis from Fangraphs, Minor League Ball, and the Giants 2011 ZiPS projections. For now, I plan on looking at the following players (in no particular order):
Belt is the cream of the crop when it comes to the Giants' farm system. He rapidly rose through the Giants' minor league system last year, raking to the tune of .352/.455/.620 slash line in A, AA, and AAA combined. Thanks to mechanical adjustments in his plate approach, the 2009 fifth-rounder was able to display a combination of excellent plate discipline, contact skills, and power. He even stole 22 bases last season; make no mistake, though -- as Marc Hulet of Fangraphs notes, "he succeeded on the base paths due to smart base running as opposed to blazing speed." Belt is the real deal, and should be ready to make an impact in the majors right away in 2011.
I think the following comments speak for themselves...
For more on Belt, check out his interview with Mychael Urban.
- Brandon Belt
- Francisco Peguero
- Ehire Adrianza
- Zach Wheeler
- Thomas Neal
- Eric Surkamp
- Brandon Crawford
- Gary Brown
- Jarrett Parker
- Charlie Culberson
It's very possible that I'll expand the list, however, and look at others like Hector Sanchez, Jorge Bucardo, Chuckie Jones, etc.
Without further ado, I'll begin with the guy at the top of every Giants prospect list....Brandon Belt.

I think the following comments speak for themselves...
"Oh yeah, ZiPS loves Brandon Belt and at least in the short term has him as the best 1B prospect in baseball." - Dan Szymborski
"Totally legitimate in my opinion, and second-only to Eric Hosmer among first base prospects." - John Sickels
For more on Belt, check out his interview with Mychael Urban.
